Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a charge for the initial consultation?

No, both the consultation and design are free. We come to the customer’s house, conduct an in-depth interview to determine the specific needs for each area under consideration, and take precise measurements. We will then produce a detailed proposal with a computer rendering of the design, not a hand-drawn and inaccurate sketch. What you see is what you get with Closets etc.

What do your customers think of Closets etc.?

Click on this link, Reviews, to see in their own words. (They love us!!)

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes to both. Our Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor Registration number is 616208, and our Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration number is 29295.

How long have you been in business?

Closets etc. has been in business since 1987. We are family-owned and operated. We are not part of any franchise, and we can pass our savings along to you. Over the years, we have developed an industry-leading integrated production system that takes the drawing straight to the factory, thus virtually eliminating errors and rework . Our factory and one of our showrooms are located in Meriden, CT, and the corporate office is in Rhode Island.

We may be small, but we care about our customers and we have built a reputation for high quality and superb customer service. Just look at the testimonials on this site (Reviews), or ask our designer to show you actual customer letters.

What is the average cost of a project?

Since each project is different and all of our designs are customized, it would not be proper to put a specific dollar amount on a job without developing a full layout and design. In general, the least expensive projects are done in ventilated wire shelving. A significant step-up in functionality and appearance is a design in melamine. It carries a higher cost, but usually offers a large increase in storage space. There are several grades of melamine, ranging from solid color to rich woodgrains that match such woods as mahogany or cherry. Finally, we can design storage solutions in wood veneer and solid wood. Prices for wood may range up to three times the cost of a top melamine finish.

We will gladly come to your home and quote you a real price rather than “winging it” over the phone or pricing a make-believe standard design that may not come close to meeting your individual requirements. We have, after all, been closet specialists for over twenty years. There never is an obligation on the customer’s part and our free consultation is only a phone call away.

How "green" are your materials?

Very! Our melamine conforms to the strictest U.S. and international rules and the California Air Resources Board Phase I emission standards, which specify less than 0.18 ppm of formaldehyde emissions for a product. The typical recycled materials content of our particleboard is at least 75-80% post industrial, and 0-5% post consumer. This means that no new trees are harvested for the production of our panels.

We can, on special order, fabricate our designs without any urea formaldehyde, which is a key ingredient in the glue used in virtually every piece of furniture made using wood products.

Please contact us if you wish to learn more about our efforts to protect the environment.

In additon, our construction techniques minimize waste in the long run by allowing us to reconfigure your closet, often without throwing away your existing shelving and other parts as your needs may change. And we all know that they do!

What is my choice of materials?

The choice of materials depends on the application. Melamine is by far the material preferred by our customers. It is available in a wide variety of solid colors or rich woodgrain patterns. The material is very durable, yet lighter in weight than wood, and it is easily maintained. It is also environmentally sound in that it contains over 75 per cent recycled wood materials (See the question on “green” above). We offer a large choice of options, such as different door and drawer styles and matching accessories. A second choice is wood veneer. Though more costly, it may be appropriate for an office, an entertainment center, or required to match other design features in the house. Solid wood design is another option, with virtually limitless variations, but at a
far higher cost. Conversely, ventilated wire is the most economical choice for some applications. However, wire may sacrifice adjustability and flexibility. Closets etc. is unique in that it has the experience to provide any solution or combination of materials that suit the customer’s space and decor.

How long does an installation take?

The majority of installations take no more than a day. Even a complete house rarely requires more than two days. The homeowner is responsible for cleaning out any belongings, removing existing shelving, patching holes or painting walls. In some installations, Closets etc. will remove and dispose of a single rod and shelf system free of charge. More complex removals are charged on an hourly fee schedule. Please call us if you have special requirements, and we will gladly provide you with additional resources and coordinate with your contractor.

Do you offer a warranty?

We offer a limited lifetime warranty on our products. Closets etc. warrants that the products that we install are free from defects in material and workmanship for as long as you own your home. We will repair defective parts free of charge.
